Kim's Place

This is Kim, my oldest stepdaughter. This was taken at her high school graduation from Pell City High School. She is 26, married to a Chris as well and she and her husband run a computer store. When I first met her she was 12 and they had just discovered that she had/has type I diabetes. Her life hasn't been easy since that, in itself, makes her different than all her classmates but she seems to have handled it with aplomb. She is on the the pump and is finally able to live the life of a *normal* human. The only other way for her to get that is the stem cell research to be funded and a way for them to recreate her islet cells in her pancreas. Then she would no longer be a diabetic. But for now, the pump is letting her *pretend* she is normal.

Yes, I'm a bit of a fanatic on the subject of both diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. There are far too many Americans suffering from both and most of them silently but the ones hit the hardest are ones like Kim...the ones who are type I who did nothing wrong but wake up one morning diabetic. I hope a cure will be found for these kids (and adults) soon.

This is the earlist photo I have of Kim. I wish I had earlier ones but they seem to have disappeared from Charles' possession. He told me that Pam was 1 in these sets so that makes Kim about 3. She was a cute kid who is now a very lovely young lady.

I've been told by Charles that this is Kim at 4 years old...she is a cute munchkin then....I wish I had known her at that point in time but then this life would not be the same. And I have their mother to thank for being half of Kim and Pam since without her, they would not exist.

This was taken at Chrismas in 1990. Kim's love of animals, especially cats, is long standing. When I first met her she told me she wanted to be a vet when she grew up. Only trouble...it would mean going to the rival school there in Alabama.

Charles said he *failed as a father, cause his daughter wanted to go to Auburn*. I honestly believe that Kim would have a dozen cats if her Poppa would let her. But that wasn't gonna happen anytime soon.

Here is Kim's 7th grade photo. The year was 1997 and it was the year we moved back to the area and Charles could be more involved as a father. It had cut him to the quick to be so far away from his kids and I knew that. That was one of the reasons I had agreed to think on his next move in our life.

This is Kim in one of her poses right after she got her black belt in Tae Kwan Do. I'm not sure of the exact ranking since it seems there are several steps JUST in black belts. In my *ignorance*, I thought you only had about 3 or 4 but it seems that there are at least 2 in just the first one alone.

Here is a shot of Kim at Chistmas in 1997 when we went down to visit. I caught her in an unguarded moment and she wanted me to get rid of the picture but I didn't. I happen to like it. It is a good shot of her.

This is one of the best we have of Kim 's senior year. We didn't get a copy of her junior class photo but we did get this one that shows what a lovely lady she has grown up to be. And this was the child who didn't want to wear girl clothes at a wedding and ended up playing a very important role of Best Person. How many people get THAT honor?
